Getting School Experience (SEP and STEP)
One of the best ways to find out whether a career in teaching is right for you is to step into the classroom and speak to experienced teachers and school staff. Southfields Academy offers school experience to those who are considering teaching in a mainstream secondary school. You can observe outstanding teachers in action and see how students work with their teachers.
The duration of school experience will vary from one to ten days, subject to availability. N.B. It is not possible to guarantee two weeks of observations, which is the minimum experienced required by many ITT providers.
To be eligible to visit us you need to hold a good Honours degree (2:2 or above) in a subject relevant to your chosen subject to teach. the exception is for Maths and Physics where relevant third class Honours degree may be considered.
There are two options, depending on your chosen subject.
School Experience Programme (SEP)
This is run by the National College for Teaching & Leadership (NCTL) and is free to participants. However, the SEP is ONLY available for the following High Priority and Priority subjects:
Design & Technology
Modern Foreign Languages (Southfields Academy specialises in Spanish ONLY).
For other subjects see information on STEP or approach your local school.
How to book for SEP
All observations for these subjects are processed via the NCTL SEP booking system available by clicking here.
Southfields Teaching Experience Programme (STEP)
This is run by Southfields Academy and covers Non-Priority subjects:
Art & Design, Business Studies, Dance, Drama, English, History, PE and Social Science.
You are not restricted to one subject. If you add extra days it is possible to observe in a selection of departments.
Our STEP programme is chargeable, but Day 1 provides an introductory session from our Director of ITT on what constitutes a good teacher, a good lesson and how to get the most out of your observations. You would then go into classes to observe for the rest of the school day and have a debrief session back at the Teaching School at the end of the day. Additional days can be added, at mutual convenience, and these would be spent entirely in the department(s) of your choice. (N.B. If you are prepapred to observe in various departments this will increase your chance of obtaining additional days).
The next Introductory Days we are booking are:
20th October 2015
24th November 2015
The fee is payable to the school before the Introductory Day commences. All participants must attend an Introductory Day before being considered for visits on any other dates.
Arrangements for additional experience days (after the Introductory Day)
Participants will be considered for additional days (after the Introductory Day) based on the needs of the school and places available. At any time during a visit, the school has a right to ask the participant to leave if they pose a threat to pupils or conduct themselves in a way that seems inappropriate.
